Types of thoughts (2)

UNHelpful thoughts

Unhelpful thoughts are those that usually make you feel stressed, worried, sad, scared, or angry. “I suck”, “I can’t do it”, and “I’ll never get over it” are unhelpful thoughts.

Unhelpful thoughts can worsen your mood and prevent you from responding to a situation effectively. This is why it’s a good idea to change them.

Helpful thoughts

Helpful thoughts are those that usually make you feel calm, confident and collected. “I can do this”, “It’s okay to feel this way”, “It’s not the end of the world”, and “We’re all in this together” are examples of these.

Helpful thoughts can improve your mood. Above all, they can enable you to respond to a situation more effectively.

Objective thoughts

Objective thoughts allow you to be realistic about a problem. It is better to have an objective thought than an unhelpful one. To turn an unhelpful thought into an objective or helpful thought, it helps to examine how realistic the thought is. In Module 4, you will see how to recognize distorted thoughts in order to foster objective thoughts.
