Food for thought: Expressing your needs

We invite you to think about how you express your needs. To express your needs appropriately, you must take your wishes into account. However, how you express your needs must be acceptable to others.

Together, think about and discuss situations where you found it difficult to express your needs.

  • How do you express your needs?
  • Do you feel able to express what you need and want?
  • What might help you better express what you need?
  • What situations prevent you from expressing your needs?
  • What would improve your ability to express your needs?

In order to express your needs clearly, here is what we propose:

  • Be in a calm enough state to recognize your needs.
  • Determine what your most important need is (e.g., taking a nap or going to buy medicine).
  • Find a good time to express a need to others.
  • Rely on an effective communication strategy.
